Preparing your car for resale: what a detailing really changes (with numbers)
The most profitable investment before selling your vehicle. How much you can expect to recover, what it really costs, and when to start.

The short answer: a full detailing can justify $1,500 to $3,000 more at the negotiation table, for an investment of $300 to $600. It's one of the only pre-sale items with a near-guaranteed ROI.
Why detailing weighs so heavily at resale
Put yourself in a buyer's shoes. They're looking at two ads for the same 2018 Civic, same mileage, same price. The first photo shows a vehicle with dull paint, stained seats, a dusty interior. The second shows the same car but gleaming, clean as day one. Which one do they visit first?
And once they're on site, which one inspires confidence? Buyers perceive (rightly) a vehicle that's been carefully kept as a vehicle that's been mechanically maintained too. That's rarely the case, but the bias is universal.
The real numbers from a Recarma case
On a 2005 Yaris that came through our shop: $1,500 estimated value before detailing, $3,500 achieved at sale afterward. Gross gain: $2,000 for a session at $350. Net ROI: 470 %.
We've seen similar cases on mid-range sedans, SUVs, and even a 2014 F-150 pickup that went from $18,000 to $22,500. The exact numbers vary with the market, the vehicle category, and how urgent the seller is. But the pattern holds.
What we actually do before your sale
The "resale prep" package we recommend includes:
Meticulous exterior hand wash with chemical decontamination and clay bar
Complete interior cleaning: fabric shampoo, plastics treatment, glass, vents
Ozone deodorization if needed
Headlight restoration and chrome polishing
Spray ceramic application to keep the shine through the viewing period (8 to 12 months of protection)
Plan for a full day with us. You leave with a car at its absolute best, one that justifies the asking price.
When should you book?
Ideally 1 to 2 weeks before your first listing. Not earlier, because the car will be driven and lose some of its shine. Not later either, because you want to photograph the vehicle at its best.
If you're getting professional photos for your listing, schedule them the day of the detailing or the day after. The visual difference in ads is dramatic.
Buyers benefit too
On the flip side, if you're buying a used vehicle, a detailing in the first few weeks lets you start on solid ground: you know exactly what shape your paint is in, the interior has been sanitized, and you can apply lasting protection from day one.
